    Sph propagation modelling of an earthflow from southern italy

    Natural slopes in clayey soils are often affected by failures which may cause the onset of landslides of the flow type travelling large distances and damaging buildings and major infrastructures. Particularly, the so-called earthflows pose challenging tasks for the individuation and forecasting of the remobilized masses; as a consequence, the mathematical modelling of the propagation stage allows enhancing the understanding of earthflows in order to obtain reliable assessments of run-out distances and displaced soil volumes. This paper deals with the reactivations of Montaguto earthflow (Southern Italy) occurred from 1998 to 2009 that are simulated, through the depth-integrated “GeoFlow-SPH” model, thanks to the availability of a detailed data-set. The achieved results provide a satisfactory agreement with the in-situ information and outline how a change of the rheology of the mobilized masses can affect the whole phenomenon

    We propose a model-independent parametrization for the one-pion-to-vacuum matrix elements of the vector and axial vector hadronic currents in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field. It is shown that, in general, these hadronic matrix elements can be written in terms of several gauge covariant Lorentz structures and form factors. Within this framework we obtain a general expression for the weak decay πlνˉl\pi^- \to l\,\bar\nu_l and discuss the corresponding limits of strong and weak external magnetic fields.Comment: 33 page

    How fertility and union stability interact in shaping new family patterns in Italy and Spain

    In this paper we investigate the interrelationships between fertility decisions and union dissolution in Italy and Spain. We argue that there might exist a spurious relationship between these two life trajectories. The analysis is based on the 1996 Fertility and Family Survey data for Italy and Spain. Results show that there is a spurious relationship between fertility and union dissolution in Italy but not in Spain. Nevertheless, in both countries, there is an evident direct effect of each process on the other: union dissolution decreases the risk of further childbearing, while childbirths decrease the risk of union dissolution

    Unilateral naris occlusion has long been the method of choice for effecting stimulus deprivation in studies of olfactory plasticity. A significant body of literature speaks to the myriad consequences of this manipulation on the ipsilateral olfactory pathway. Early experiments emphasized naris occlusion's deleterious and age-critical effects. More recent studies have focused on life-long vulnerability, particularly on neurogenesis, and compensatory responses to deprivation. Despite the abundance of empirical data, a theoretical framework in which to understand the many sequelae of naris occlusion on olfaction has been elusive. This paper focuses on recent data, new theories, and underappreciated caveats related to the use of this technique in studies of olfactory plasticity

    On August 30, 2018, in Anonymous v. Anonymous, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, First Judicial Department held, for the first time, that a plaintiff-relator had sufficiently alleged that the defendants had violated the New York False Claims Act by using a captive insurance company for the sole purpose of evading taxes. The tax evasion scheme was brought to light by a former employee who utilized the New York False Claims Act’s qui tam provision. A qui tam provision allows a private citizen to stand in the shoes of the government when bringing an action. This Comment argues that Anonymous is an example of how beneficial a tax qui tam provision can be in uncovering complex and clandestine tax avoidance schemes

    Non-thermal photons and direct photodissociation of H2, HD and HeH+ in the chemistry of the primordial Universe

    Non-thermal photons deriving from radiative transitions among the internal ladder of atoms and molecules are an important source of photons in addition to thermal and stellar sources in many astrophysical environments. In the present work the calculation of reaction rates for the direct photodissociation of some molecules relevant in early Universe chemistry is presented; in particular, the calculations include non-thermal photons deriving from the recombination of primordial hydrogen and helium atoms for the cases of H2, HD and HeH+. New effects on the fractional abundances of chemical species are investigated and the fits for the HeH+ photodissociation rates by thermal photons are provided.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication on MNRA
